The rapid arrival of emergency water supply equipment is often as crucial as its production capacity. The Red Cross, in collaboration with SPECTRA New Zealand distributor Enertech, leveraged their experience with the Aquifer 360 to create a customized system better suited for transport on commercial flights.
The equipment was subsequently deployed in Tonga, the Marshall Islands, and Rarotonga, supporting the emergency drinking water needs of these island regions.

Solving Transportation First Allows Equipment to Reach Disaster Zones
The Red Cross required the system to meet planned airline baggage weight targets, enabling rescuers to quickly transport it to mission sites via commercial flights. Airline and route regulations change over time, so actual transportation still needs to comply with current hazardous materials, weight, and size regulations.
Not Just Desalination, But Also Freshwater Treatment
Rescue sites may have access to seawater, brackish water, or contaminated freshwater, so the system was required to have a purification mode for freshwater input and output. The built-in AC to DC power conversion also allows the equipment to be powered by portable AC generators, increasing flexibility in power configuration.
Robust construction and an intuitive operating method for volunteers were also core design elements. If professional equipment relies heavily on factory technicians, it's difficult for it to be valuable in multi-country, multi-island, and high personnel turnover relief missions.
