Red Cross Emergency Operation: Deployment of customized version of SPECTRA land-based portable water generator Aquifer to provide drinking water source in Polynesia
Red Cross Deploys Aquifers in Polynesia
The Red Cross approached Enertech, Spectra's New Zealand distributor, to produce a modified Aquifer system after having success with the Aquifer 360's. They needed a desalinator that met IATA baggage restrictions so that it could be carried on a commercial airline to ensure they could be rapidly deployed when needed. This meant it had to weigh less than 30 kilograms or 77 pounds.
The Red Cross also wanted it to function as a basic water purifier for fresh to fresh purification and to have a built-in AC to DC power supply so it could be powered from a portable AC genset. There was also considerable emphasis placed on rugged construction and ease of use by volunteer workers. To date the units have been deployed in Tonga, Marshall Islands and Rarotonga
