Taiwan Backstop Action Day | KATADYN Rapidyn Emergency Water Filter System Participates in Disaster Response Drill
In September 2024, the Forward Alliance organized "Resilience in Action," a multi-unit disaster response exercise. It brought together civilian volunteers, government agencies, and professional rescuers to test their collaboration and on-site response capabilities during a disaster.
During the exercise, KATADYN Taiwan showcased the Rapidyn emergency gravity water filter system, which enables water treatment without relying on electricity, making it possible to quickly establish water purification points in communities and temporary shelters.

Original Case Information
Disaster Drills Test Not Just Personnel, But Also Water Supply Procedures
Large-scale disasters can simultaneously cause water outages, power failures, road closures, and increased medical needs. Even if there's a water source nearby, if water quality cannot be confirmed or treatment procedures established, drinking water can quickly become one of the first shortages.
Resilience in Action, through cross-unit practical exercises, allows volunteers and professionals to become familiar with equipment, roles, and communication methods during peacetime. Water treatment equipment must also be practically understood in such drills to ensure rapid deployment when truly needed.

Rapidyn: Gravity Filtration Without Reliance on Electricity
Rapidyn uses gravity to pass raw water through a 0.2-micron ceramic micro-pore filter. The manufacturer states a flow rate of approximately 4 liters per hour and a filter cartridge capacity of up to 20,000 liters, meeting WHO's Highly Protective requirements for bacteria and protozoa.
The ceramic filter cartridge can be cleaned and reused, making it suitable for power outages, temporary shelters, and long-term backup. The system should prioritize the use of identifiable water sources free from chemical contamination, and installation, cleaning, and maintenance should follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Turning Equipment into Actual Capabilities
Equipment only becomes effective during a disaster after it has been inventoried, tested, assigned, and trained on during peacetime. Communities and organizations need to first confirm available water sources, daily water consumption, containers, water collection and distribution routes, as well as filter cleaning and replacement methods.

KATADYN Taiwan's understanding of the case: The significance of emergency water filtration equipment lies in enabling communities to move beyond just having "supplies" to knowing "how to collect, treat, store, and distribute water." Drills can transform equipment specifications into truly executable water supply procedures.
