In the event of a disaster, water outage, or supply chain disruption, an ideal water source may not be available. Water may be turbid, pose microbiological risks, or only brackish water or seawater may be accessible. We have compiled four principles of drinking water treatment, representative products, and real-world examples, and included emergency food, to help users establish their disaster preparedness and relief strategy based on on-site conditions.

First, confirm what kind of water is available on-site.

No single water treatment method covers all situations. Before choosing a product, understand the on-site conditions based on the water source, contamination risk, power supply, and scale of use.

Emergency Water Collection Principles

During severe disasters, drinking water may only be obtainable from less than ideal sources. Among the available sources, prioritize water with a relatively lower risk of contamination, away from oil spills and discharge sources, and then treat it according to the product's capabilities. General disaster preparedness products cannot be assumed to remove oil, pesticides, heavy metals, industrial wastewater, or unknown chemical contaminants; if such contamination is clearly suspected, seek an alternative water source or use confirmed appropriate professional treatment equipment.

Different Technologies for Different Problems

The actual treatment process depends on the water source. The following is a simple guide to understanding the relationship between each technology, which does not mean all water sources can be treated with the same steps.

Turbid FreshwaterFirst reduce sand and suspended solids, then consider filtration, chemical treatment, or UV treatment based on microbiological risks.
Clear but UnsanitaryChemical and UV treatments focus on microbial treatment, but do not remove all dissolved substances or chemical contaminants.
