Tuvalu Water Crisis | SPECTRA Solar Desalination System Establishes Multiple Power Backup Solutions
In October 2011, Tuvalu's freshwater lens, which supplied its water, gradually dried up. With the rainy season yet to arrive, the island nation had to re-establish its drinking water supply amidst limited energy resources and aging equipment.
SPECTRA Watermakers and New Zealand's Enertec Marine Systems jointly built a 48V DC solar-powered desalination system, integrating batteries and a diesel generator, to ensure continuous water supply based on the available energy conditions.

Original Case Information
Disappearance of Freshwater Lens, Immediate Island Water Crisis
A freshwater lens is a layer of underground freshwater floating on saltwater after rain infiltrates a low-lying coral island. Tuvalu and many atolls rely heavily on this limited water source; when prolonged low rainfall depletes the freshwater lens, residents can only wait for rain, external water delivery, or activate desalination.

Allowing the Water Production System to Switch Based on Energy Conditions
Colin Pawson of Enertec was responsible for integrating the solar panels, battery bank, diesel generator, and desalination system. The system prioritizes renewable energy and switches to batteries or a diesel generator when conditions change, preventing interruptions in drinking water supply due to a single energy source.
SPECTRA's low-power water production technology allows higher-output desalination to be driven by solar energy, reducing the island nation's long-term reliance on diesel and mitigating the impact of fuel prices and shipping disruptions on water supply.

KATADYN Taiwan's understanding of the case: The resilience of island water supply comes from having more than one source of water and energy. Integrating solar, battery, and generator into a single water production system allows the equipment to continue operating when weather and fuel conditions change.
