Hurricane Iota impacted Santa Catalina Island on November 16, 2020. According to the original case documentation, approximately 98% of the island's infrastructure was damaged, necessitating the re-establishment of electricity, transportation, and water supply.
The equipment needed to be transported by air and small boats, operate without relying heavily on volatile fuels, and allow local technicians to operate it with limited training. These conditions mandated a system that was mobile, had low energy requirements, and could self-regulate.

The Colombian military first transported the equipment to the disaster area by plane, then delivered it to Santa Catalina Island via small boats. Its modular packing allowed the Aquifer 360 to navigate various transportation stages and reach the deployment site even with damaged roads and port facilities.
The system was paired with solar panels, eliminating the need to store and transport large quantities of fuel. World Hope International also trained local technicians for operation and basic maintenance, enabling the equipment to continue providing water after external support departed.

Traditional reverse osmosis equipment, if operated continuously at inappropriate pressures when raw water conditions change, can lead to system over-pressurization or damage to the RO membranes. The Aquifer 360 features a fixed recovery rate and a self-regulating energy recovery design, allowing it to operate according to water source conditions and reducing the need for on-site personnel to repeatedly adjust high-pressure parameters.
This characteristic is especially important in disaster areas. Operators do not need a complete background in water treatment engineering to perform basic operation and maintenance after training. In this case, Colombian President Iván Duque Márquez also visited the site and drank the water produced by the equipment.
